EXAMINATION OF OPENED AREAS

On July 11, 1994, I examined the CT-49 cutter, SELF RELIANCE, (documentation # 92380) owned by Dr. Dave Weisher, at the request of Mack Horton.

The purpose of the examination was to:

1. Inspect and comment on installation of the ports:

The design of the ABI ports presumed that the internal and external parts are screwed. Screwing into thin laminate is not a particularly seaworthy arrangement. The ABI suggested method for through bolting would damage the protective chrome finish at the holes where they were drilled and tapped and possibly cause peeling of the chrome finish starting at those areas. The use of T-nuts and through bolting has substantially upgraded this installation and brings it into line with acceptable practices.

2. Re-inspection and recommendation for bottom:

The hull has been peeled and has been exposed to drying for a considerable time now. Consideration of relamination in addition to epoxy barrier coating has been an option. I would consider this to be a good option. We have found just enough failures in epoxy barrier coating, even when the best currently available materials and techniques are used, to warrant a very serious consideration of the relamination option. I would recommend 18 oz glass and epoxy, followed by normal barrier coating.

The above report is presented without prejudice: The undersigned surveyor has no personal or financial interest in the vessel being surveyed.
